The Depths of Durangrar: A Dungeon Crawler...in the dark

Created by Creative Cove Games

The Depths of Durangrar is an asymmetrical dungeon crawler that's played in the dark. Play as explorers who use LEDs to light up only what's in front of them in a modular maze that's different in every game. Or play as the monster who has a night vision camcorder and can see all the explorers and the whole maze.

December 2020 Update: Additional copies for sale and an upcoming new add on.
over 3 years ago – Mon, Dec 14, 2020 at 11:10:04 PM

Hello!

It's been a while! I hope you all have been doing well! Thank you so much for supporting the Depths of Durangrar Kickstarter campaign. Since completing delivery, it has been extremely encouraging to hear lots of positive feedback from you! I’m especially ecstatic that in many of the responses, many explorers experienced a jump scare rounding a corner only to come full view into the monster, exactly as I hoped.

I’ve wanted to let you know I’ve started selling the remaining copies of the Depths of Durangrar at $100 MSRP. If you are interested in picking up a copy for friends or family, I’d like to extend the kickstarter pledge price to you as a thank you for supporting my kickstarter and being patient for delivery for the past 4 years. Copies are available here:

The discount code is: KCKSTRTR2016

Lastly, I wanted to let you know I’m working on a new game mode and add-on to the Depths of Durangrar. The new game mode would be a collaborative game mode with no monster initially and it would introduce a lantern as a new game piece. The lantern would slowly dwindle and fade unless the explorers refuel it. While the lantern is lit, players will work together to uncover all the gold mining tokens scattered in the maze. However, if the lantern goes out, then the player closest to the lantern will become the monster player and hunt down the remaining explorers. I’m really excited for this concept as The Depths of Durangrar first started with the idea of having a cooperative mode but early playtests fared poorly. I’m hoping introducing a timed element provides the added tension necessary to make a cooperative mode work. This is still an early concept but I was able to get a prototype working recently. Hopefully I will be able to begin playtesting soon. Please let me know what you think of this new game mode!

This is an early prototype and the appearance is likely to change.

May 2020 Update: Delivery Completed!
about 4 years ago – Mon, May 18, 2020 at 12:17:00 AM

Hello!

At this point, just about everyone should have received their pledges. Please contact me ([email protected]) and [email protected] if you have not received your pledge.

What a journey this has all been! The Kickstarter campaign had successfully funded May 27th 2016. Just about a full four years later, the game has been delivered. I am so thankful to all of you for funding the campaign and continuing to believe and encourage me throughout these past four years. I can honestly say that your encouragement and patience has been a huge contribution to the success of this campaign. A lot of you have sent me extremely thoughtful and encouraging messages throughout the campaign and after delivery, thanking me for sticking to it but the truth is I’ve got so much to thank you for as well!

Thank you for your kind messages after each Kickstarter update, especially after the updates about setbacks. I was so terrified to post each update worrying I missed something or it would not be enough. It’s also been a constant source of motivation to me to continue to deliver something every month and provide an update. Delivering the game would seem monumental and overwhelming sometimes but breaking down the next step to something to be accomplished in a month made each step easier to digest and accomplish.

This is a very special and amazing community. When I wasn't be able to provide night vision goggles per the original vision, I had offered to refund everyone's pledges. However, I got an outpouring of emails telling me many of you would rather get nothing, so long as I tried every possible solution, than to get a refund. I never would've imagined I'd ever receive that kind of response. It was absolutely shocking and inspiring. It’s finally paid off and I’m so extremely proud and happy to be able to pay back your faith, patience and pledges with a finished copy of the game.

I’d also like to take the opportunity now to thank my friends and family who’ve been a tremendous help playtesting the game, supporting me throughout, and helping whenever they could. I’d also like to thank Wingo Games for manufacturing the game and OTX shipping and Quarter Master Logistics and the delivery workers around the world for coming through with fulfillment despite the current events surrounding Covid-19. And lastly, a huge shout out to the Kickstarter and board gaming community that has put together a ton of resources and guides that have given me amazing insight into jumping into game design and publishing.

So what now?

This will be a one off Kickstarter campaign. I’ve used the entire fund from kickstarter to fulfill delivery and won’t be able to self-fund a second run. That being said, I will continue to support any questions and comments you have indefinitely. I also plan on making the designs open source and available online. I’ll post an update on where all the files can be found afterward so if you feel inspired to create your own explorers and monsters or build the biggest maze possible, you are more than welcome to! If a publisher is interested in picking up the game, there’s the possibility of another production run that way I think. Or maybe a 2nd season of the game but to be quite honest, I don’t have any original material to do that as of now.

There are some extra copies remaining so feel free to reach out to me if you're looking for another copy!

It’s been a tremendous feat to get this far and I couldn’t have done it without all of you! There were a lot of setbacks but I don’t regret a single moment of it. My favorite part of board gaming is the exhilaration that comes from new experiences and challenges that reveal strengths and skills we didn’t know we have. Game design and publishing has taken that experience to a whole new level.

2nd March Update Wave 2
about 4 years ago – Mon, Mar 30, 2020 at 01:27:30 AM

Wave 2 shipping is ongoing! EU and AU/NZ has started already. US/CA/rest of the world will be beginning Monday 3/30.

Some FAQs have come up from shipping in Wave 1:

1.) I can’t find the battery or charger for the camera nor the light up miniature bases:

The treasure tray fits the plastic insert tray really well but it is remove-able. You can find those components packed underneath that tray.

2.) Are the end of turn circular shards stickers?

The thin shards that are the end of turn shards are shards, not stickers. Originally they were stickers the second stretch goal we hit were to turn them to shards so it was possible to flip them over so that the shard could be concealed, expanding the gameplay. It’s optional to leave it flipped up or flipped down and they are set up by the monster player. I apologize for any confusion.

3.) The instructions say we should have 30 of each of the end of turn tokens but I only have 72, (24 of each token).

24 of each token is the correct amount. There is a misprint in the instructions. Each game will have 64 spaces at most in the 8 x 8 maze configuration.

4.) I have not received a tracking number for my pledge.

If you have not received a tracking number for your pledge, please reach out to me (jack@creativecovegames) and/or quartermaster logistics ([email protected]) and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you!

March Update 2020
about 4 years ago – Mon, Mar 02, 2020 at 12:04:32 AM

Hello!

Shipping is underway! I’ve heard back from a number of people that they have not received tracking numbers. If you ordered additional miniatures, your pledges are going out soon and that’s why you have not received tracking numbers yet. However, if you did NOT order additional miniatures, then your pledge has gone out already. Please check the email address you used for Kickstarter and your spam inbox. However, if you still do not find the email, please contact me at [email protected] and I’ll send you your tracking number.

For those who did order additional miniatures, production has completed on the PCBs and they are on their way to me and due to arrive on March 2nd. I expect fulfillment to begin in 2 weeks. I will need a week to inspect and assemble the miniatures with the PCBs and then I’ll have them rush mailed to the fulfillment center where they will sort through them and begin the last leg of shipping.

Lastly, I’ve heard from a few backers that they found electronic components such as the battery and charger for the night vision camcorder beneath the tray. Please check there if you cannot locate the battery for the night vision camcorder.

Shipping Update
about 4 years ago – Sat, Feb 22, 2020 at 09:59:44 PM

Shipping will begin Monday!!!

However, shipping will go out in two waves. The first wave will be everyone who ordered the main game as well as those who ordered the main game and expansion pack. The second wave will be anyone who had ordered additional miniatures. There was a shortage of printed circuit boards for the extra explorer miniatures and we’ve been investigating what may be the reason. To reiterate, this will NOT affect the main game, only those who ordered extra miniatures. I apologize for the inconvenience. I definitely ordered enough extra PCBs with spares so it makes me think either a box was lost or unaccounted for. I’ve placed a rush order for replacement PCBs and hopefully will have this resolved as soon as possible.
